Warsan is the face behind instagrammable letterbox brownie brand, The Good News Baker. Baking out of a small oven in her home kitchen, she has seen her business go from strength to strength since setting it up in May 2020, completing nearly 300 sales through her Etsy shop in just five weeks.
While still having a demanding full-time job, the flourishing business was born out of a need to overcome both the anxiety and depression she was dealing with throughout 2019. Inspired by episodes of The Great British Bake Off and Martha Stuart cooking programmes, Warsan began experimenting with recipes for biscuits, sugar cookies and cakes and then eventually focused on perfecting her brownies.
'I was in a really bad place...battling with anxiety. When I was in the kitchen, stirring and mixing with a spatula and just a bowl I found it so soothing. I felt like everything was calm, mentally, I had nothing in my head for the first time in many months.'
After being encouraged by friends and family to invest in developing her skills and her business, Warsan launched her Etsy shop and now offers a range of four brownie flavours, original, Oreo, salted caramel and cookie dough, with several new flavours in the pipeline. Personalisation and out of this world customer service is at the heart of her brand, with Warsan's own name being the inspiration for the company name; Warsan means 'good news' in Somali. Customers can expect made to order goods and a hand-written note with each order, thanking them for their support.
Although still in the very early stages of business, GNB has gained the support of a number of social media influencers and Warsan has big plans for the future; watch this space!
